Soldier’s Soliloquy

(written in April 2024)

choke on something hard and clear it from your soul

not sure if it’s apathy or cigarette smoke

your mother told you son you’ll never be the one

so now you see your future through the barrel of a gun

it’s 100 degrees in some place god left long ago

or at least that’s what you thought before the clearing of the smoke

pick up the rubble of family homes and family bones

god was never on their side

he’s on yours

go on son kill those terrorist scum

go on son show those commie bastards who’s the one

just close your eyes and shoot that gun

or better yet just press the button and

run

i promise you’ll come home a hero

try not to look in the mirror

i promise you’ll come home a hero son

i promise that you’ll finally be the one

thought it would be simpler here so far away from home

it guess it is cuz you only dream of blood and drones and chrome

wonder if your mother would be proud of what you’ve become

do all heroes feel this numb

you hit the cardboard cutout right between the eyes

it only took 5000 bullets and some friendly advice

“don’t look em in the eye” they said or you might see their soul

but you can’t look away now that he sees

yours

“thats the target, fire away”

go on son kill that terrorist scum

go on son and show that future bomber who’s the one

just close your eyes and shoot that gun

or better yet just press the button and

run

he’s guilty - that’s why he’s running

he threw that rock he had it comin

cuz he’s goliath and your david

ain’t that right son
